Welcome to the Class Blog
Welcome to the community blog for ESL 5073 Computer Assisted Language Learning. This community blog is for taking our discussion of topics, issues and resources in CALL beyond the classroom. All students will be responsible for participating in weekly discussions on the blog and for leading 1 blog discussion during the term.
In order to participate, you'll need to set up your own personal blog on blogger and request membership to this community. Once you do, introduce yourself here by replying to one or two of the following prompts:
1. Have you ever kept a blog before? If so, for how long?
2. Have you ever used technology in your teaching before? If so, what kind of technology did you use and for what types of classes and learners?
3. What sorts of technology are you interested in learning to use?

I taught University students and had them use the website: http://lang-8.com/
ReplyDeleteThe assignment was to edit other learners' journals and write their own journal entries to have them edited by the other lang-8 users.
Interesting website Dan ~ thanks for sharing. Cat
DeleteSee you in class ...
1. I have never kept a blog before. I wanted to start a blog during my student teaching, but I didn't have the knowledge or skills on how to begin.
ReplyDelete2. I didn't get a chance to use technology while I was student teaching.
3. I am interested in learning any and all technology that will help me effectively teach ELL students. I am especially interested in Literacy. Hopefully I will become more proficient in that class in that aspect.
I'm with you Roxy ~ although I have done blogs before .. I too hope to get better AND more comfortable with blogging. Cat
DeleteI have used technology in a teaching setting but never in a formal classroom setting. I taught students in Ukraine for two years and had a weekly English club after school. The extent of the technology use was listening to music and watching some short videos with the use of my laptop. We would afterward do some related activities, but these never recquired any further technology.
ReplyDeleteCRMR, I have friends that are from the Ukraine. Would love to visit, if not teach there someday.
DeleteI think music in the classroom creates a peaceful learning environment. Thanks for sharing. Cat
Hi, everyone.
ReplyDeleteI am DongDong Cao, you can call me Alex. It is my honor to study with you guys.
These are my answers
1. I have never kept a blog before I took this class. I only use Chinese version of Facebook called "RenRen". However, I always take a look at a lot of singers` and actors` blogs.
2. I have worked for New oriental school in XI`AN for one year as a teacher. I always use PowerPoint to illustrate questions to my students who were studying in high school
Greetings Alex,
DeleteI've never heard of RenRen.
Is it an international fb type networking?
Or just for China?
I love Ppt,have you ever tried Prezi?
It's fun, hard at first, but very dynamic after you have learned the process.

DeleteI would like to learn the Blog and as I do not have a lot experience using any advanced computer technology, maybe in some way the Blog will help me to begin it.
DeleteIt's very important these days to have a good knowledge about computer technology and I'm looking for it.
Yes, I've blogged, using Web 2.0. We were required to blog our assignments.
ReplyDeleteYes, I have used technology in my classroom and tutoring.
Being my undergrad is in Spec Ed ~ I've use adaptive technology, with non-speaking students, as a tool for speaking.
CALL ~ because this is the first time hearing of CALL and I'm excited to learn as much as I can ...
Thanks! Cat :-)
I used skype a couple of times with my students in Japan. The first activity we did I had the class skype video call my cousin in Kentucky. Everyone was pretty excited but we only had a limited amount of time to get everyone a chance to chat. The second time around students called me to my phone from their computers.
ReplyDeleteThey were both fun activities but I was team teaching with a Japanese teacher so there was a formula that we ended up following which guaranteed results.
Still, I had fun and the students all had a blast.
I too believe utilizing Skype in the classroom, as well as our daily lives. Thanks. Cat
DeleteI have never used blog before. I heard about in Dr. Wright’s class. I hope to learn about.
ReplyDeleteI tried to use technology in my adult classes but I did not realize that some of the students did not know how to use a computer.
I want to learn about Second Life, it sounds like something I would like.

DeleteLus, computers can be frightful, especially for older FLL's. Students are typically learning a foreign language at the same time they are learning computers. YIKES! Cat

ReplyDeletehhjhhh
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry about my last comment. I'm not really sure what I did wrong. Anyways, I have never had a blog or actually read one, but I am looking forward to trying something new.
ReplyDeleteI never had access to modern technology when I taught in Russia and in Serbia, but I do have plenty to choose from at my current job. My classroom has a Smartboard, which I have primarily used to show pictures off the internet for vocabulary words. We have also used youtube to find videos on the students' countries. In addition to this we have a learning center where students can use the internet to do vocabulary and grammar exercises. I have not done anything approaching web2.0.
My hope is to become more comfortable with the technology, especially the Smartboard.

DeleteGreat Jeremy, I like this question on top of your first discussion from TESL CALL spot, "Should Certain Topics be Off-Limits for Students in Classroom Blogs", and I support your message you have sent to us.
DeleteOne of the greatest aspects of our human lives is to be free people and express ourselves in a free way. I know what is means to be a free from my own experience, after I escaped from persecution of the Soviet System, where I could not live as a free man.
As we have a great privilege to enjoy freedom of this nation, we should express ourselves as a free people in different aspects of our lives, including political or religious issues and we should not avoid any topics we have in our minds for any reason, because this nation respects and supports our human freedom.
Through the freedom, we can express and exchange our ideas of any subjects and in this way we could increase our knowledge about them.
Hi, this is my first time to have a bolg but I sure I will learn about it.
ReplyDeleteI have never owned my blog before, and I even be with a little negative emotion on it in the past because I often think this is not real me on the internet. But I still like to embrace this rapidly changing world with more and more modern communicative technologies, for example the blog!!!
ReplyDeleteI have no experience as teacher to use technologies but I have learned English by myself through video, wikis, PPT and chatting room. So I think teacher today need to master a diverse range of skills connected with computer or internet and make use of them to stimulate language learners' interests. I hope that I can become a smart teacher with proficient skills to use computer technologies, and I am interested in how to make a beautiful and powerful PPT.
how long do we have to wait before we get the invitation to join?
ReplyDelete2. I have used various forms of technology in the classroom - wikis, discussion boards, blogs, PPT - mainly with online writing classes for juniors and seniors at TAMUSA. I have also used cellphones and synchronous discussion in face-to-face freshmen writing classes at BUA. I have tried Prezi a few times, but found it too time consuming.
ReplyDelete3. I am interested in having a chance at becoming more proficient in using the technology I already use as well as learning about new ones. I haven't had much experience using technology in the ENGA class that I teach, but I thought this class would be a good way to get some ideas. I would also like to learn more about how I can use gaming in the classroom.
