Future Classrooms?

I recently came across this article, which discussed the great success Dardanelle School District, a school in Texas, was having with their ELL program. Their success was contributed to a program called Imagine Learning English. This type of classroom set up is vastly different that the type of classroom I had in school. In my school experience, computer time was rare and limited. This article made me think of how much schools have evolved in the past few years. Hopefully soon, many more schools will experience the success that Dardanelle School District had by using technology in the classroom.

What do you think future classrooms will look like? Technology is rapidly changing the way our school system works, what do you think is in store next? The new white board is a new technology expected to be seen in classrooms soon and ipads are starting to pop up in classrooms more often. But what else have you see or heard about that may soon transform how the typical classroom looks and operates? What is your opinion of the wave of new technologies that are now a part of everyday classrooms? In your teaching experience have you had trouble adapting to the changes being made or do you embrace them?

The new white board!

  1. Excellent Post Miss Tiffany! Excellent!
A couple of years ago, I toured The Carver Academy (www.thecarveracademy.org)~ it depicted our future! From an interactive digital whiteboards and laptops in every classroom, to i-pads for every student ~ replacing Blackberries! Yes, Kindergarten students using Blackberries! In addition, students discovered the world of digital presentations, publishing, photo editing, film production, audio and sound design ~ just to name a few.
As per The Carver Academy, having exposure to the latest technology will ensure students are engaging in real-life, meaningful experiences. In doing so, active learning, creative thinking, and collaboration will assistance and prepare students for the future of technology is daily life.
    Again, excellent post!

  2. WOW! That is a very SMART smart board. I would have loved to have it in any of my classrooms when I was in school. I still remember using a type writer in middle school. It wasn't until I was in high school that I would use a computer on a semi-regular basis, but that was just to type papers. This type of futuristic technology will definietly take teaching and learning to another level. For teachers, it will help them create innovative lesson plans that promote critical thinking among students and also develop colloboration with other teachers. Also, since technology is being introduced to students at such a young age now (iPad in Literacy), it will, like Cat mentioned, only continue to prepare them for future technology in daily life. I have heard of school districts providing Laptops, E-readers and iPads for students to utilize. One of the major drawbacks is that not every school district will have the means to purchase this type of technology, therefore, a majority of students will not have access to this educational technology.

  3. I agree with Cat and Roxy that exposure to technology will help the children of the future use technology. I think technology in general is very helpful to instruct students because it can expose them to much more content than an unchanging textbook. My only fear is that it is very commonplace to have standardized tests, and computer programmers may be judged on whether or not they have created a successful computer program based on the students test scores. Therefore, the software may be greatly influenced by tests. For example, I heard of a school in North Carolina that teaches through laptops. The teacher is more of a facilitator and the students work through the material on their own. There are no honors classes, or regular classes, everyone in the same room working through the curriculum at their own pace. But, to complete a section and get credit to move on to the next section the students must answer questions that are based on the standardized test. So, the students are basically taking a standardized test everyday. And the standardized test is not authentic. So, I think there are good and bad things about technology.

  4. I think that as advanced as some classes might get, not all school districts will ever have the funds to afford the most up to date hardware. It would be nice if everyone had access to new technology, but as we've talked about in class there are unforeseen circumstances that can make it so that the technology doesn't work as it should. So even though I like technology, embrace it and feel that it definitely has a place in classrooms now and in the future, I still feel that the teacher should be the one to teach and should be capable of teaching regardless of what technology exist.

  5. With all the benefits of more technology in the classrooms, one thing I dread is the increased amount of product placement that will accompany it. So many schools already are inundated with commercial advertisements on Channel One, school t-shirts, posters, and school signs. Beyond this hesitation, the only other one I have is administration's tendency to want to save money at the cost of the quality of education. Just as self-check outs are replacing cashiers, computers will replace many teachers. Authentic learning will be lost as well. Technology is great when used as a supplement to the teacher. Let's hope we can keep it like this for a long time.

    1. In higher education circles, I see this discourse growing. This is especially the case as online education is seen as cheaper and more profitable (though not necessarily comparable). I too worry about the teacher being completely replaced by overzealous embracing of technology.

10 years ago, I did not feel this way, and I wonder where we will be 10 years from now.

  6. I think technology is becoming important part of children’s lives. From classroom settings to home use, computers are now a part of how children learn, play, and communicate. What is important is when children should have access to these technologies. Teachers are responsible of what technologies children should explore. For future learning I think technology will continue supporting learning and we will have a technology-rich learning environment.

  7. It is quite amazing to see computers used so much in the classroom. I never used a computer for school until I was at university and I would walk to the computer lab to type a paper.
My current classroom has a Smartboard and I think it is amazing for bringing up images of vocabulary words. The problem we have here is when it doesn't work. Luckily, I also have a whiteboard in my room where I do all of my writing, but a couple of weeks ago I was out of luck in another classroom when the Smartboard didn't work. There was nothing else to write on and I would have been better off being in one of my old Russian rooms with the blackboard. Overall, I think new technology is great in the classroom, but you can't count on it to work.

  8. Technology is becoming very important in the future class. Its great to see the students using new technology, they know more than I do. I would love to have a Smartboard in my classroom. I have notice students enjoy using technology in the classroom more than using paper and pencil.

  9. I can't imagine how powerful the smart board is to visualize the vocabulary words for students. I am out of luck to have such experience being taught like this. Today's new technology really makes me green with envy. I think the smart board is really magic by presenting the vivid story or displaying the abstract conception like life circle of butterfly. I would like to embrace it in my future classroom, but what I concern is as same as that Arm323 has said. We cannot assure that all of students can be supported to get access to such advanced teaching resources. Therefore, as teachers, we still need to be a professional teacher first meanwhile to keep in abreast of new amazing technologies.

  10. Fast progress of technology is so important these days for many human needs. Of course, this modern technology in some future could establish a new way for a school system to work and operate. Evolution of technology has a great impact on the existing learning. In the future students will use and apply more types of technology during their training. Maybe more learners will stay at home and use distance learning. I think, in the future with modern technology development, students will need classroom, a physical space where learning can take place. They will need instructors, who will trained them.

  11. I have a hard time embracing change when it comes to technology. I have not mastered any computer skills beyond those needed to complete relatively basic computer functions. That said, I do understand the relevance of the new technology that is out there already, and the fact that it can be used to enhance classroom settings. This appreciation of the importance of technology is one reason that it is useful for me to be in the CALL class which we are all a part of.

  12. The technology is amazing in the future classroom. With the development of technology, I think more and more student are able to get benefit through smart things like iPad or white board. The new technology will definitely have a great revolution and significant impact on traditional type of teaching. I have heard that Microsoft is developing glasses-free 3D technology that follows viewers' movements and projects images directly into their eyes. Therefore, I believe if people use this advanced technology in classroom, especially in some fields associated with architecture, this new revolution will definitely make a great impact on teaching just like when people first time see the iPhone.

  13. I think that that whiteboard was really big and that future classrooms will probably look very different. I think the overall weight of materials used for class will decrease. For example, instead using a couple notebooks and textbooks, students will use a single device or an ipad. Flipping pages is pretty easy, but I can’t get used to typing in the touch screens yet, I have borrowed cell phones with touch screens and I still feel uncomfortable typing in them. Maybe I should buy a new cell phone will a touch screen eventually I can transfer those skills to bigger screen. If I’m able to type fast, then I want that technology, if not I will keep my pen or keyboard.

  14. I think use the technology that is good way for future classroom. The new technology will definitely have a great revolution and significant impact on traditional type of teaching. I have heard that Microsoft is developing glasses-free 3D technology that follows viewers' movements and projects images directly into their eyes.If I will be a teacher, I want to try to use this Ipad or Macbook is the classroom.

  15. Hi Tiffany , great post!!
I think that smart boards will definitely be essential tools in every classroom in the near future, unless they come with a more advanced technology. I personally have never used a smart board but I have heard about it when I was in Saudi. Some of its advantages are that it can play a major role in distance education, conferences, workshops, etc "since it's directly connected to the internet". It aslo enables the teacher to record or to save the lesson so no excuses for absent students!.
With this fast-growing technology world, it's hard to predict the future but it's so important that schools can integrate these technology so students won't feel they are living in two separated worlds.
